Kotara is a suburb located in the city of Newcastle, in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. It is located approximately 9 kilometers west of the Newcastle central business district and is part of the City of Newcastle local government area.
Kotara is well-connected to the rest of Newcastle, with several major roads passing through the area, as well as several bus routes and a train station. The suburb is also close to several major tourist attractions, including the Newcastle Museum, Fort Scratchley, and the beaches of Merewether and Bar Beach.
